Todd and I, we’re looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills just in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn't cost them a dime. ... My staff and I spend most of our days, we're dealing with this stuff instead of progressing our state now.

The question isn't whether a governor is personally liable, but whether the governor has to pay for her own defense of ethics violations.

Alaska will reimburse legal expenses of public officers accused of ethics violations if the public officer is exonerated. So, until the charges are cleared, the governor is required to pay for her own legal defense.
