"Governments may fail when people are hungry but they also fail when people stop being productive."

Absolutely, our government will fail anyways when/if it gets to the point where it can no longer afford to feed an unproductive population (a la Russia), but if the government stops feeding people before that point we fail sooner.

So we are between a rock and hard place and it will take some creative solution, not related to cutting a large segment of the population (1 in 8 and growing) off from the food supply, to work our way out of the problem (if it is even possible).

As for my solution, I offer none as it is pointless...rather just watching histroy unfold/repeat and trying no to get run over too badly by it.

"Governments may fail when people are hungry but they also fail when people stop being productive." I will no doubt suffer slings and arrows but I think people being productive is always better than conditioning them to suck at the government teat. Productive people have greater self esteem. Non-productive people have very low esteem which frequently manifests itself in frustration and vilolence.

So, in answer to Terry's question I would eliminate welfare to all but the seriously infirm and handicapped. Food stamps too.

I remember when I was in college and living on a small allowance; I would go to the Safeway and very carefully choose my purchases. Whilst people with food stamps would be buying steaks I would be buying hamburger. I was very put out by this especially since my parents were in a position to give me whatever I wanted.

Funny thing; the lessons I learned about not getting a free lunch, earning money and living within my means helped me accumulate a very nice little pot. But, I made sacrifices when I was young to do it. I didn't spend every cent I made on crap. I saved it and later I learned how to invest it.

Welfare is used as another control tool.
