>>So, in answer to Terry's question I would eliminate welfare to all but the seriously infirm and handicapped. Food stamps too.<<

That would be fine in theory, if you had half-decent jobs for them ... but you've already got discouraged workers bringing the real unemployment rate to 16% or whatever ... seems to me you're going to have to be shooting them down in the streets under that scenario, cause most people aren't going to just roll over and die.

>>Welfare is used as another control tool<<

I agree with that, and actually most of your post, but especially "Productive people have greater self esteem. Non-productive people have very low esteem ..."

I live in a poor rural area, with a higher than average welfare rate. A few years ago they opened a call center here, and a lot of people got jobs as a result ... they were remarking with relief how good it was for their pride to be off welfare.

Of course the stupid call centre closed down a couple of years later, but a number of them applied and were hired by a newly opening Tim Horton's (donut chain) ... at minimum wage, it probably doesn't pay them any more than they would get from welfare as single mothers, but they just like 'feeling productive'.

Here's the real problem, and why we're going to have to expand and dignify 'welfare' or shoot down more and more people. From the combine to the computer, technology has making more and more people redundant ...
