"Monster king salmon caught and released off Queen Charlotte Island

Posted by Mark Yuasa

This giant king salmon is one for the record books!

The Queen Charlotte Lodge off the northern British Columbia coast saw guest Chris Lewis break the lodge's 10-year-old record with a king that topped 84 pounds this past Saturday, Aug. 20.

Lewis was fishing with Queen Charlotte Lodge guide Derek Poitras along the kelp beds just east of Klashwun Point when both rods went off in a matter of seconds, according to the lodge's website.

While Lewis played his fish, fishing partner Stephen Mason played and boated a hefty 31 pound king.

Lewis fish broke the surface a few times, and they could tell by the wide shoulder on the fish that this was no ordinary salmon. After a half hour battle, Derek slipped the net under the big silver beauty, and they all breathed a sigh of relief before carefully lifting the fish into the boat.

Fishmaster Keith Burdett assisted with measurements (51.5-inch length by 35.0-inch girth for a score of 84.12 pounds) and took photos before Derek spent 15 minutes reviving the king.
