Some q's.

Is .25 or better required for 256MB dram? If so, then all will have to have that capability to compete since the price per MB should be significantly less than with 16Mb dram.

Next q?

With new machines comingg out with 32 to 64 MB dram or SRAM, will manuafacturers want to install 8 x the memory (say 8 X 32 mb now common. Say it is costing $3.50 MB now or $132 per average PC. Say 256MB is $2.00 per MB. That is $512 per machine. A lot extra to pay in the days of $1000 machines.

Once capital costs are out of the way I assume that the cost of manufacture of a 256MB SIMM is about the same a a 16 MB SIMM. If that is the case, the new machines will allow return to profitability for those who invest in the new technology - assuming the market will buy enough 256MB machines.

Fantasizing for a moment - a 300 mhz P-II, 256 MB on board memory and a cable modem connection for about $3K. Wham bam - damn fast internet access and every other activity. Also probably much cheaper flash meory and super powerful hand hleds and digital cameras...
