> What could it be? Hong Kong became pre-eminent over 100 years while "more intense still" locales did not. Can you think of anything about Hong Kong that might explain that difference? Rumour has it that Rudyard Kipling rules were in force in Hong Kong which meant freedom in many ways, but you don't think that had anything to do with it.

Oh well, it might be just one of those oddities that are unexplainable. Could be ufos or something.
