My parents took me to church, because:

1. My mother wanted me "exposed" to religion.

2. Going to church was what "normal" people did in the fifties and sixties and before. The place to network!

3. Church is a great place to make friends away from work. My mother, not particularly religious or spiritual, actually a "secret" atheist ( I discovered much later), used the place as a social club.

4. My father, an agnostic, went to church because he was an executive, it was expected of him, and my mom made him. I learned of his agnosticism much later in his life, when I asked him if he actually BELIEVED in that crap. I was gratified by his response.

When all us kids became teenagers, we refused to continue to go. My dad took to falling asleep during the pastor's sermon and snoring loudly! My mom quit dragging him along to avoid the embarrassment, and wouldn't go alone. - I really LOVED dad for that!

Just because atheism isn't the status quo doesn't mean religion is only the result of indoctrination. That seems to be the line of thinking you are using.

I am so rigidly planted...i know that folks come to it spontaneously (and that's another story)...but for the vast majority of people it's socially and culturally inculcated...it's the reason the south is more religious than a typical northern region for example.
