Here's a dated but still interesting article on Fujitsu that may partially explain why they are hell-bent on grabbing market share. They actually think that they can couple their world-class manufacturing process skills with technology leadership down the road!?! This one doesn't look like it will be ready for primetime until 10 Gbits/in2 and beyond, which IBM believes won't be necessary until 2001. By then the conventional wisdom is that perpendicular or vertical recording (as opposed to the current longitudinal or horizontal recording) will be required to go up the density scale.

The drive industry is working to improve yields on magnetoresistive (MR) heads, which have a typical MR ratio of about 2 percent. Giant MR (GMR) heads promise a 7 percent ratio, with areal densities in the range of 5 to 10 Gbits/inch2. Drive heads based on TMR films could push the ratio to seven or eight times that of GMR heads, theoretically sending areal densities to 120 Gbits/inch2.

Here's a link to Alison Chaiken's comprehensive Magnetics Web site. I believe Shahar posted this a few months back, but there is a link there to Fujitsu's web site.
