Are we talking about high crime areas with high unemployment where municipal government is either inept or incompetent? The whole concept sounds like a third world country.

Yes, American cites that have been under Democratic control for 20 to 100 years. Almost all are crumbling and dens of crime and disease, with little to no quality education.

They are hopeless, as are the organizers.

Joe,

I have never met a community organizer.

You have met me over this site. I was trained at the Industrial Areas Foundation, Saul Alinski's Chicago Institute.

I have not lived in a community that needed one.

Have you or your neighborhood ever had a disagreement with your City Council which was in opposition with your neighborhood?

Why would there be the need for a community organizer?

On a small scale, If your neighborhood ever had a disagreement with your City Council you may have needed a community organizer who knows the procedures in obtaining the data, and putting together people power so that the City does not run over you.

What kind of neighborhoods have them? Small - Large ones.

Those with the power of a community never give up their power willingly - it has to be taken from them either in reality or perception wise. Communities where you have "green lining," or "red lining, or power figures/community/agency leaders who do not listen to their constituents need a organizer. Where there are issues which impact large number of individuals you may have a community which needs community organizers.

Are we talking about high crime areas with high unemployment where municipal government is either inept or incompetent?

No! Once area which is of concern to communities is the assessments of ones real estate property and the assessment of corporations. I was involved in a community where the assessment of a corporation was severely under assessed while the assessments of residential real estate was over assist to make up for the corporations under assessment. Many time the "bag man" of a community is the assessors office who has tremendous power in most communities.

The whole concept sounds like a third world country.

I things keep going with individual reduction of the US standard of living we may be moving downward to a third world country. That is the fear that many of us have which may impact our children and grandchildren. My law enforcement friends indicate that correction facilitates are growing very rapidly. With an annual cost of approximately $27,000 annually we fund the criminal whether we want to our not providing them with food, shelter, clothing, recreation, education, religious services, and healthcare. But, they give up their freedoms. However, the conditions may be better than the environment they have come from.
