Covanta to Produce Clean Energy From Crane's Paper Waste By Shannon Roxborough on September 16, 2010 Covanta Pittsfield LLC, a Massachusetts-based subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation ( NYSE: CVA), a global operator of large-scale Energy-from-Waste facilities and other renewable energy projects, has signed on to convert waste paper fibers into clean energy for Crane & Company, the famed producer of fine stationery for more than 200 years, which is known for manufacturing the paper used for U.S. currency. Pending regulatory approval by the state's Department of Environmental Protection, the pilot project, to be fully operational in spring 2011, will process five million gallons of waste a year from Crane's 50-year old waste pits—which have been dormant since the 1980s. The resulting energy would be used to power four of the company's paper mills and its corporate headquarters for between 10 and 13 years. Convanta, which has supplied Crane's operations with steam since 1981, earlier this year secured funding from the Army Corps of Engineers to develop technology for converting garbage into biodiesel that would be indistinguishable from crude-based diesel fuel for use in military vehicles and generators. Prior to that, Covanta expanded its existing deal with Hawaii's Hpower to convert waste to energy in the 50th state. Producing paper is an energy intensive endeavor, but the pulp and paper industry has reduced its overall energy consumption by more than 40% in the last 25 years.
