ElM, your history is on the blink. "America" was independent of England long before Victoriana. The English tried to stop American slavery. Earlier, English people profited from slavery, doing big business in it. Earlier too, the English themselves were slaves to barbarian Barbary pirates. See Wilberforce and co for the end of slavery. The Boston Port Bill was long before 1870. Looks like 100 years before that. As usual, your Anglophobia stops you seeing straight. It takes a long time to civilize people. Often it can only be done with later generations. Maoris were eating each other and unfortunate Europeans too for a long time after the English arrived to teach them how to drink tea with proper etiquette. Mqurice
