Off Topic: Horse Racing

Back when I was in college, in Schenectady, NY, my roommate (who was a big racing fan and actually had a car) used to take weekend trips to Saratoga for harness racing. Being the adventurous type (and considering Saratoga is known for having more bars per person than any other town in the US, not to mention a predominately woman's college nearby and the drinking age was 18), I used to tag along.

I did well the first time out and decided the best way to get better was to buy a book on it. The only book I could find explained in great detail how to "score" each horse. I dutifully did all the math each time out, checked it twice, and promptly got killed... every time. Broke and destitute I decided to sell my body... no no no, that part is not true, but it would have made a good ending don't you think? The truth is I had fun while it lasted but my career as a handicapper has been put on indefinite hold. As someone who has run track competitively in high school and college, I know that unless there is a clear favorite, numbers are most often meaningless.

Speaking of Breeders' Cup victories, I vaguely recall hearing that my roommate and his family became race horse owners and won a Breeders' Cup some time ago. The family name is Coppola out of McLean, Virginia. Sound familiar? Also, I'm not sure if the name Sandy Hawley, a Canadian jockey, is familiar to you, but my father is good friends with him.

Anyway, it's nice to know my hope for a bright future for Alydaar is Affirmed (gg).

- Jeff

Tony, (Horse Racing)

I would like to talk more with you about my favorite topic, which is horse racing. I haven't met anyone in a long time with your knowledge and experience. I'm going out of town for a few days, but will e:mail you when I return, if you don't mind. Don't want to tie up this forum with "pony talk", but I really like Jeff's comment about the "future of Alydaar being Affirmed".
