Houston Colleges To Train Workers For Brazil's Oil Fields

Local community colleges and universities are joining with PANGEA — The Houston Supply and Logistics Institute to help train workers for jobs in Brazil's offshore oil and gas fields.
The partnership aims to produce skilled workers for Houston-based U.S. companies with operations in Brazil. Lone Star Corporate College will develop the curriculum. The University of Houston, Rice, Texas A&M and San Jacinto College are joining with Lone Star in providing the training.

Richard Carpenter, chancellor for the Lone Star College System, says the program aims to build up Brazil’s native technical workforce. He says the training will also help U.S. engineers looking for jobs.

“The moratorium on drilling in the Gulf has had just a devastating effect on Houston’s economy, on Houston workers, and even though that’s somewhat lifted, it’s still very slow getting permits. And what is happening is that workers are having to look for work elsewhere, and Brazil right now is a very hot market because of the incredible new discoveries they’ve got.”

The Oil & Gas Journal says Brazil has roughly 13 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and about 13 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves.
