What your slide rule interfering with your glasses?

Get em on and read this:

"Compaq has been pioneering the sub-$1000 consumer market with systems based on the MediaGX processor from Cyrix. Pushing that agenda forward, Cyrix will unveil two reference designs at COMDEX that aim to show OEM's how to bring down the cost of consumer and corporate PCs.

Cyrix will show a home theater PC with a DVD player and 3D acceleration: the company thinks OEMS could sell the system for as little as $1299. The design is powered by a 200MHz version of the MediaGX that supports Intel's MMX technology and sports an enhanced floating point unit. Samples of the chip are now available.

Cyrix will also show a small profile corporate desktop using a 166MHz MediaGX with on board 10/100 Ethernet. Cyrix thinks the system could sell for as little as $500.

"WE ARE GOING TO DO FOR THE CORPORATE MARKET IN 1998 WHAT WE DID FOR THE CONSUMER PC IN '97," said Steve Tobak, VP marketing at Cyrix. "THIS HAS TO HAPPEN, ITS THE FREIGHT TRAIN THAT NO ONE CAN STOP."

=====================
This article also points out that Cirrus Logic is looking to design their graphics processsors into the low end mother boards that support the MediaGX. It mentions a $50 mother board target price.

Articles conclusion: The popularity of low cost systems is affecting the market's migration to Pentium II systems.

I hear the sound of an inflection point coming out of that DVD player.
