Rod, COM has one and only one strength. Developing reusable components for stand-alone WIndows Applications in <insert language of choice here>. In that, it is great. The problem with MS, is that they just can not admit that COM for the wire stinks. Nor is COM a good platform-independent technology. Since the real money in APP dev is in C/S and legacy, (and soon to be in internet) MS is left out in the dust, while BORL now has one of the best CORBA products. Let MS have the desktop. That is a shrinking market (for developers). The enterprise is where the money is (and where MS ain't).

Thanks for the lesson Rod.

Someone pointed out that they were disappointed that Symantec's Visual Cafe was PCWeek's Best Product and not one of Borland's products. I'm not surprised. But... now that JBuilder C/S is out what's the bet that this product garners a bunch of awards and displaces Symantec's product.

My sense, when at SD'97 this year, was that though JBuilder was a very good product, interest (sales) would really take off once the C/S version was released. I think this is true and would be interested to watch the product reviews over the next little while.

JBuilder C/S is humongous!!!

Maybe the Visigenic thing and the JBuilder release were not entirely unconnected events?
