That is a very interesting story.

I'm currently reading an eBook version of "Astoria" by Washington Irving. Irving was contracted by John Jacob Astor to write the book, and provided him all the archives. Irving did a very credible job of making a potentially dry-as-sawdust book into a readable story.

Astor sent two expeditions to found Astoria: One by sea around the Horn and the other overland. Both are filled with real west adventure and the stuff of novels that haven't been written. Maybe nobody is interested in it anymore, but I can always wish.
