I think I understand what you are saying which is:

"Hey, the Earth has gotten warm before (agreed) so why is it different this time and, if so, how so?"

And this is where my not being a science guy is a detriment to the discussion because I do really think the warming guys are saying it IS different this time because man made activity has produced x levels of this, y levels of that, and z levels of whatever; and this stuff wasn't there previously in any other warming period.

Furthermore, I think, based on my reading of N&B's posts that some of the global warming guys (Hansen for sure) is saying something to the effect of:

"Not only is it different this time, if we don't act soon enough it's going to be irreversible, we're not going to get cold again like before because of the cumulative effects of x, y, and z in the atmosphere. Furthermore, not only is not going to get cold again, we, as a planet will reach a tipping point, that will preclude us from doing anything about the warming--ever. And then, well, we're toast! (G) And this why we have to take enough actions presently to avoid reaching the tipping point. IF we don't take action we'll be like the proverbial frog in the slow warming pan that suddenly becomes hot enough for the Frog to realize he has to jump, but then he can't because by that time his leg muscles have been impaired."

At least that's my layman's sense of the warming scientists argument.

Now I want to go back to your previous post and comment on that because it is very interesting to me. And I'll make comments in another post that responds directly to that.
