Syquest is now selling removeable storage using MR heads. We'll probably see the same from Iomega soon. This offers an interesting condition where the sale of one of these drives could lead to sales of heads far in excess of the highest end drive.

I know that Innovex supplied interconnects to Iomega through Read-Rite. I don't know who supplies Syquest. These disks would appear to use 4 heads and 2 platters. That would be pretty advanced stuff. Does anybody know more about this?

Regards,

Mark

SyQuest Technology unveiled a 4.7-gigabyte system that combines the flexibility of removable storage with the speed and throughput of high-end fixed hard disk systems such as audio/video drives. The new Quest, a featured product of SyQuest's previously released Rocket platform, is a removable cartridge drive that integrates dual-stripe magneto-resistive (MR) recording heads. Intended for creative professionals and information technology managers, Quest's 2MB cache buffer and ultra-wide SCSI interface allow full-motion playback and real-time streaming video direct from the drive without dropping frames. A single 4.7GB cartridge can hold the digital equivalent of a full-length feature film and can serve as the boot disk for an entire system, Website or server.
