Hi Kiri: i have been doing a lot of back testing lately, not much investing, but i have come across the following results.
using the Stock Farmer new high selection process:
the stock must make a new high of at least 1/2 point with a minimum of a 50% increase in volume(over average daily volume and preceeding daily volume)--this method has produced good results

if you can combine this with a breakout from a base--excellent results
(i have not come up with a formula to scan for the breakout from the base--if anyone has one, i would really appreciate it)

the second criteria that has worked really well is a minimum of 35% annual growth rate or 75% increase in quarterly growth ( i am using high % because i'm trying to find only the best)

on back testing i found many of the companies produced 50% growth after the move had already begun (i think you would need to use analysts projections--but this technique has yielded poor results for me in the past--too many inaccurate projections.

all thoughts , comments appreciated
