An extracurricular activity is required by contract. We have a list- and as teachers we have to do at least one- they involve time outside of the standard school day. Some of us get put on committees which meet in the evening, some supervise clubs ( usually once a week, on our lunch break), and there are various other things like that. Parental complains get lodged in our permanent records. It doesn't matter how stupid they might be- but on the other hand, most people don't overcome their apathy unless something is really wrong. I can't tell you how many complaints it takes to get rid of someone, but we do get rid of teachers in my district (and that's a good thing, imo).
