Well.. :o)

Cell phones :0) I have a landline for my DSL.. NOTHING else on it.. NADA,, Over 40$ a month,, but cell can be had for publicmobile.ca 15$ unlimited local in Toronto. 24$ unlimited talk AND text in Toronto.. 35$ unlimited including Canada wide long distance.. Cell phones immediately don't mean you are rich, in fact.. it means you may be a value shopper..

was a time when indoor plumbing, landlines and electricity were luxuries.. now I do not think they are ...

My kids (depending on kid) and us have
  • cruised the Yangtze
  • camped under a glacier @ 10 thousand feet in the Beartooth pass..
  • crossed Canada and seen it in detail... (lots more to go)
  • been to France and Spain
  • skied Lake Louise and Whistler and Mt. Tremblant regularly
  • sea kayaked off the cost of Nova Scotia
  • sea kayaked off the in Megan's Bay US VI
  • snorkeled in oceans
  • night snorkeled in oceans
  • plays hockey (2500$ at least with equipment)
  • ski races (3500$ including equipment)
  • does martial arts (recent Brown belt... black belt next)
  • goes to university of choice
  • seen much of the US..FLA, California, Yellowstone.. etc etc.. Buffalo blocking the road :O)
  • etc etc etc.

Yes my kids are privileged in many ways.. (mind you my expectations are high also) but I certainly

I do not begrudge someone at the lower end the small pleasures of cable, AC etc etc.. .. I think your examples with the sorry post were of the mark.. I understand the visceral reaction,,.. but upon reflection.. I cannot agree..

on the car issue.. well depends upon the car.. here in Toronto despite government propaganda public transit is crap.. unless mostly you live in better (expensive) neighbourhoods ,, so if a guy need a beater to drive to work half way across the city ... fine by me.. of course if it's a new Beamer lease.. well that's just wrong :O)
