It is not up to the American taxpayer to backstop oil company profits.

The best way to lower the bill for oil in the US, to lower the gigantic trade deficit, to reduce the need to send our children to an early death to protect the oil supply lines, and the best way to start down the long road to curtailing the damage being done to the climate is to stop wasting oil. Cheap oil is not saving our economy, it is destroying our economy, wrecking our finances and our environment. So long as oil is subsidized to artificially make it appear to be 'cheap', the US will flounder.
