As he's developed into the Tigers' second-best starting pitcher behind Justin Verlander, many have wondered just how Doug Fister has become so successful. Perhaps it can be summed up in one word: Movement. Friday's start against the A's provided a good example, with Fister constantly changing the eye level of his fastball and preventing Oakland hitters from looking for it in a certain spot....

Investor Talked to Mets but Buys Part of Yankees
_____________________________________________________________________

By DAVID WALDSTEIN
The New York Times
September 19, 2011

Ray Bartoszek, a longtime Mets fan and former oil trader who was a finalist to buy a significant stake in the Mets earlier this year, has instead emerged as the newest limited partner with the Yankees, according to two people with knowledge of the transaction.

Bartoszek bought a share of the Yankees from another limited partner, according to the two people. It is unclear how much the share represents. Bartoszek becomes one of about 30 partners involved with the team, including members of the Steinbrenner family, with Hal Steinbrenner acting as the team’s managing general partner.

The deal between the Yankees and Bartoszek was completed Friday, and Bartoszek was at Yankee Stadium on Monday afternoon to watch the Yankees play the Twins and perhaps see Mariano Rivera pick up a record 602nd save.

Bartoszek, 46, made his fortune trading oil for Glencore International. He was believed to be the runner-up to David Einhorn in the search for a minority partner that the Mets’ owners, Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, conducted this year. The Mets are under continuing financial pressure, in part because they are dealing with a $1 billion lawsuit filed against them by the trustee representing the victims of Bernard L. Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

Bartoszek describes himself as a passionate Mets fan who remembers staying up late in 1979 to watch Lee Mazzilli hit a home run in the All-Star Game. He had intensive talks with the Mets in the spring, including meetings with Wilpon and other team executives.

Unlike Einhorn, Bartoszek’s bid for a share of the Mets included a small portion of the Mets’ profitable SNY network. In an interview with The New York Times in June, Bartoszek said the Mets submitted a counterproposal to him in late May that did include a share of SNY and that at point, he was optimistic that a deal might be concluded.

Instead, the Mets, just a short while later, selected Einhorn, only to see his $200 million deal for a share of the team fall apart earlier this month.

The Mets are now looking instead to recruit a series of small investors, rather than someone to make a substantial investment comparable to Einhorn’s figure. But the Mets will not be talking with Bartoszek about becoming one of those investors. Instead, he has put his money in the Bronx.

I like this 2012 opening day line up very much:

If Reyes does resign, Wright must be traded and Murphy given the third base position. That puts Tejada/Turner (whoever is hot) at second base.

The bullpen needs to be revamped. Closer is needed.
