I think of it as facts and reason versus myth and script.

Reason had taken root in ancient Greece, but a massive conflagration pretty much destroyed that young forest and only the seeds remained and had to wait for almost 2,000 years for a viable environment before they sprouted again in the 17th/18th century to grow into todays modern civilzation.
