The next generation of cheap, high resolution flat screen display technology is years from reaching mainstream consumer markets. >

I agree. Tell us, who are the leaders in this field?

Kevin; Small flat screens are here now, 14" a bit over $2000.Big ones get expensive fast. I expect that Comdex will debag a few new lower prices for them. So they will start to kill CRTs right now for those who want the space saved, and are willing to pay for it.The large monitor dominated the desk, both by size and weight, etc. The new flat screen will be similar to laptop lids in size with feet, or ceiling hooks, or articulated arms. You can have a multiple video adaptor with a number of them, each dedicated to a view/app. There will be less reason to put all windows on one monitor, except when you want it that way. It is easy to envision a desk with a TV/video/video conference screen, and several data screens, each independent, and each sendable to video confreres. An addressable mouse(one mouse for all screens, you tell it which one it is active on, either by boundary crossing or switches, or ??)
Same with the keyboard. It will enter alpha on whatever screen you choose, or use voicetalk, for same uses.

All running on the same desktop.

Bill
It is a nuisance to watch a movie on a 21" screen 24" from your nose,(like a desktop) so the cone of acceptable viewing will resemble what we have now with ordinary TVs when we show video.
The flat screens will allow for different aspect ratios, but I expect one will eventually win the standards race.

== Compaq eyes AMD's K6 for Presario line ==
zdnet.com

Though no licensing agreement has yet been inked between AMD and Compaq, the latter is looking to have about 60 percent of the Presario line based on the K6 by the end of 1998, sources said.

...

That's expected to change in early 1998, however, when AMD transitions production to its 0.25-micron manufacturing process. The company expects 80 percent of its processors to be built on 0.25 micron by the first quarter, and no products built on 0.35 micron by the end of the third quarter.

No wonder that Intel has been patching so hard lately in emphasising the importance of sub-$1,000 PC and urged the troubled Far East to buy more of these expensive and bugged Intel processors.
