Doesn't seem like it's working at its current levels.

How do you know?

Krugman and his followers want that increased by an order of magnitude, but the reckless fiscal policies that result from it will itself destroy consumer confidence. Witness the whole debt ceiling fiasco and the S&P downgrade which followed.

Liberal response: Blame it on the Tea Party.

You may have possibly cited two examples of extremes on both sides of the political spectrum...fortunately our president is not siding with either one.

My response: Get our fiscal house in order. That forms the foundation of consumer confidence.

Yes of course...in the long run that's the prescription, but little else helps get the fiscal house in order like economic growth (or conversely the lack thereof)

Most people have no idea what the deficit or debt actually is. Why would that have anything to do with consumer confidence unless it were drummed into their heads over and over.

What they know is that many people around them don't have jobs, that they're not getting raises, that they're paying for more of their own benefits, that they don't have real pensions, and that their own livelihoods aren't terribly secure.

If you thought you had a good chance of losing your job in the next six months, would you make major purchases?
