Many people know what is meant by "debt" and "deficit" roughly, although many, many people confuse the two. But most people understand it has something to do with spending more than you take in.

While most people know it is a very large amount of money, I would venture to guess that a very small proportion of Americans could write the number "14 trillion" out on a piece of paper if you asked them to. And I would wager a much higher percentage of Democrats couldn't do it than Republicans.

There may be people posting on this very thread who couldn't do it.
