as defined in the US is not poverty, per se. we agree on that.. said it is relative.. but comparing a poor in the US to a Sudanese refugee for example makes no sense (not that you did that)... we seem to disagree in that I think the poverty gauge is not fixed depending on where you are... just like a middle class in China would not be middle class here... (US/Canada, close enough for this discussion)

Should not the bar for the richest counties in the world be higher ... should we not expect more for our folks ? definition of poverty is always different depending on the agenda of those proclaiming it.. so that is why I singled out those items as I did.. no absolute poverty gauge.. Even homeless here are better off than many in other countries...

"Winter's Bone" A few recent indie films have provided glimpses of what the Joads might look like in this new century — "Winter's Bone" comes most forcefully to mind — but mostly the moviemakers are far removed, in their own lives and in their products, from what the majority of Americans are living through now.

An indie movie is an independently produced film with a minimal shooting budget

I was in July on holidays in Brazil. Winter very cold this year. Thus a an afternoon in Curitiba means cake, coffee and a movie.

I saw the placard of the film and the beauty of the actress very appealing and rented. Need to watch it once more.
