To my mind, you can track that directly to the (R)'s taking the House. Which was Obama's fault, for not making JOBS job #1 on day 1.

And it got better from there, for a while. But we've stagnated again.

In other words, you think ephemeral feelings had that much of an impact on consumer confidence.
