WisPolitics: Six unions file to recertify under new collective bargaining law
9/23/2011

Six state employee bargaining units have filed with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission to recertify under the state's new collective bargaining standards ahead of Thursday's filing deadline.

State government bargaining units faced a 4:30 p.m. deadline to file a petition for recertification and pay a fee to WERC. Groups choosing to file face certification elections next month; a majority of the total union membership must approve certification annually under the new bargaining law.

The six groups filing as of the deadline included SEIU Healthcare Wisconsin -- the largest union to file with 1,035 members -- along with the State Professional Education and Information Council, Council #1/WEAC (650 members), Wisconsin State Building Trades (570 members), the Association of State Prosecutors (358 members), the Wisconsin State Attorneys Association (265 members) and the AFT-Wisconsin affiliate Professional Employees in Research, Statistics and Analysis (58 members).

Most of the state's largest public employee unions, including all Wisconsin State Employees Union units and most of the units in AFT-Wisconsin, have indicated they won't seek recertification.

Bargaining units in local school districts face a Sept. 30 deadline to file recertification papers with WERC, while local government employee unions must file by Jan. 30, 2012.
