Wood is an excellent source of energy. It can be used to create biofuels, burned directly, turned into a synthetic gas or pyrolyzed – turned into a liquid to create electricity.


wood is a horrible source of energy. It burns dirtier than coal. Hell, it burns dirtier than peat or lignite. And it has a much lower BTU rating than lignite or peat. And just doesn't even deserve comparison to coal for energy content.

And where you are correct that a decomposing tree will release the same CO2 that burning it will, every tree you cut down removes a CO2 sink from the equation.
