Don't ever buy the first iteration of any automobile. Wait to see how reliable it turns out to be. And whether your mechanic can get parts.

You'd be better off with a used Toyota Corolla. Or a Honda.

Personally I am quite fond of Subarus. My husband drives a 2005 Subaru with more than 100,000 miles on it, very few repairs. Number one son drives a 1997 Toyota with 140,000 miles on it, inherited it from my brother. Has needed some work but not much. Brake job, new alternator. Number two son drives my old 2006 Toyota Sienna, which just had its first brake job, needed nothing else but new tires, even though he drives like a lunatic (which might explain the brakes and tires). My 2009 Subaru looks so new people think it's a 2011.

Really cannot beat the Japanese for reliable cars.
