>reasoned argument or try their hand at a solution to the widening wealth gap, they start using the M and S words...in fact if there is any reason to bring marx into this conversation it is to note that he reasons that, in capitalist systems, an unsustainable wealth gap is inevitable...for the 50 years following WW2 the US proved him wrong...now we need to go back and see if we can do that again for the coming century without suffering through a revolution or nasty conflagration...

Marxism is much more predictive than it is instructive. Sometimes Marx was wrong, and sometimes he was right. He didn't really predict capitalism being given guidelines and rules that helped it become a good system. In his day, it was nothing but abuse... but we have seen it be good, as well.
