There is an argument that MVP should be a non-pitching position as there already exists the Cy Young for pitchers. Having said that, it's not too difficult to argue that Verlander has been as important to his team as any non-pitching player has to theirs.

Hey, Verlander, Bautista, Ellsbury...they're all up there on the podium where few others hang out. Any one of them can play for my team...Oh hey, Bautista does play for my team!
