>>Their ads say, 'Look, we've got sweet systems at competitive prices, you know our name, so buy from us.'<<

not better than ibm's new entry into the market. i believe gtw comes with ms office and i know ibm doesn't - this is the benefit but not many people value getting ms office instead of ms works. at least they should have a choice. gtw limits their customer base this way.

>>They don't want a part of the sub $1K market; it's
apparently not worth their while.<<

let's see, they want the consumer market but it isn't worth their while to participate in the fastest growing portion of that market - BY FAR?

>>They're betting people will want to spend more
than that to get a better system and a better name (I'm not saying that CPQ, HWP,
or Dell are any less of a name, but Gateway does have a name with the consumer)<<

don't leave out ibm and their full featured box for $1k. cpq, hwp and dell will have to match ibm at the very least. right now you can go to a store, touch and feel the boxes and buy one that is every bit as good as a gtw for 30%+ less. from ibm - no name recognition problems here. oh, and it has a 56k flex modem too!

>.they may very well still struggle to
increase earnings;<<

a very telling statement since last q they didn't have any earnings ;-)

gtw the stock may go up - in fact i hope to see the mid $30s pretty soon. however, gtw the company has massive problems - not the least of which is poor manufacturing and marketing.

i wouldn't be surprised if the over $1k consumer pc market was shrinking at a rapid pace...
