They fulfill a lot of functions, but one of the primary functions is to help allocate capital to investments based on risk and reward. That function has been all but destroyed over the last few years, by not only their own trading actions, knowing full well that the Fed would backstop their over the top risk taking, but also by the Fed itself in bailing them out and giving them 0% interest rate loans so they could buy treasuries and pocket the spread. The whole game has been steal from Americans to recapitalize the banks. It's a criminal fraud orchestrated and executed by the Fed in collusion with the largest banks. we need to break them up and put the executives in jail.
