It was pretty common knowledge that the Navy had a high gay population."... Ahhh..no You are not the only one. :-) I remember it well, even liked the song. ...."But where it may not have been openly sanctioned, it certainly wasn't a secret that there have been gays in the military for a pretty damned long time.".... True, and there was no controversy about it as there is today...seems there is no limit to the problems fanatic liberal thinking can create. :-(

Just curious, but what was your dad's impression on the gay population in the Navy? Did he see any evidence of it? During my hitch there was only one sailor that I wondered about, nothing concrete just a weird vibe......and one incident in the head where there was a tiny hole in the sheet metal between stalls, either there was an eyeball there or I imagined it....either way, I gave it a rattling backhand that was instant headache worthy. There was an incident at a temporary duty barracks that landed two guys in the brig awaiting immediate discharge from the service.......Maybe I just didn't know the secret handshake, but that's all I have to add to the rumor......Though we did hear plenty of talk about the marines.....such as eating bananas from the side to avoid any suspicion.
