Scientific American had a great article on "The Expert Mind" a couple of years ago. They did a study using chess players and found it takes 10 years to develop an expert mind. Longer than to become a brain surgeon.

They said the mind builds a software program. One example they use was a chess master, and they asked: him :how far ahead do you think?" He said I don't do that, I just make a move and it is the right move. SA also found people who had developed an expert mind made decisions much quicker.

Science is finding the mind is always maping information and building software programs. So the more information you feed the mind, the better it will function. Science is also finding that most of what we do everyday is done on the unconscious level.

A mind experiment everyone can do is close their eyes and imagine driving in the left hand lane and then try to move over to the right hand lane. Can't do it, you will over correct and drive off the road.

I partly earned my way through college playing low ball in the clubs in California (mostly San Jose) and since moved on to Hold em. I win much more than I lose and spent the winter a couple of years ago playing the higher limit games between Seattle and San Francisco. I seldom lost and the simple reason is that I knew the game better than the kids I played against. I could see a game they couldn't see yet. But I have played for 50 years and read many books on poker by the masters.
