That sequence could extend to a sixth month for only the sixth time since 1928, according to Dow Jones market data, as the clouds of disappointing economic data, weak technical outlooks and the ongoing European sovereign-debt crisis continue to linger. The S&P 500 dropped 2.5% Friday to end the month down 7.2% at 1131, completing its first five-month losing streak since the period from November 2007 to March 2008. The most recent instance of a six-month downtrend occurred from April to September 1981. October could provide some relief for investors, according to Birinyi Associates. The S&P 500 has gained 0.7% on average in October since 1962 and has been positive 61% of the time, the research firm said in a note dated Sept. 29. The S&P 500's longest downtrend was a nine-month stretch from January to September 1974 that was part of a two-year period when the market dropped in 20 out of 24 months. Stocks crashed during the "Nixon shock," after the U.S. government canceled the direct convertibility between the dollar and gold. Losses were exacerbated by an oil crisis when the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries proclaimed an oil embargo in response to U.S. backing of Israel during the Yom Kippur war. Consecutive monthly gains have been both more frequent and longer in duration, according to a Sept. 9 research note by Goldman Sachs analysts led by David Kostin. The market has risen in five or more consecutive months 30 times since 1928, including a 12-month sequence ending in March 1936. A seven-month stretch from March to September 2009 is the most recent example, Goldman said. market down firms cut pension$$$ unemployment 9.2% are you better off under the odumba fiscal failures and only wants kickback$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of BP and solar companies
