"I have to admit that Bre-X came to mind, since the "find" is supposedly off the coast of Papua, New Guinea..

There is a lot of gold in that area. No reason to think the geological environment was diminished due to a stock market scam.

There is an area near four corners New Mexico that has a diamond source somewhere close by. The early promoter of the project took his prospect to some brokers in San Francisco at the turn of the century. The backers liked it but thought it would help to raise money by salting the area with more diamonds - some of them cut. The poor prospector was accused and spent many years in jail. The source is still there.

A diamond mine was found in Botswana by ants bringing to surface little red garnets that come the from the same rock/ore that diamond is found in.

Those same garnets are right here:

"White ants, which had built towering mounds on the desert, provided the solution. Gibson and Lamont realized that these ants had tunneled hundreds of feet below the surface of the desert in searching for humid earth for their nest, and with the mud they retrieved they also brought up traces of minerals from below the surface. By analyzing samples from these ant colonies, Gibson and Lamont found traces of two other minerals-garnets and ilmenites. Since both these minerals frequently occurred in kimberlite, they had reason to hope they were on the right track."
