To the extent the tariff applies on raw materials or intermediate goods you directly harm your own exports by making them more expensive. Outside of those things you indirectly harm your own exports by inspiring retaliatory tariffs, and by encouraging the companies you price out of the market to go after your export markets instead. All of which is done by imposing a tax on Americans, making them pay more for goods and lowering their real standard of living.

We have been and still impose tariffs. What you are discussing is what happens when tariffs are too high. I am saying we have problems because we have little or no tarifs in the name of free trade. Free trade, at least as it is practiced, is proving to be a failure.
