I saw Willie Brown, former mayor of San Francisco, on TV the other day. He told of how the longshoremen's union saw that container ships, giant cranes and forklifts and trucks that would haul the containers straight from the waterfront were going to eliminate thousands of longshoremen jobs. They made a deal with the shipowners to share with the newly jobless longshoremen before it happened, to cushion their transition to other jobs.. Something along those lines needs to be done for factory workers.
