Americans now disapprove of Barack Obama as much as they do Russia's Putin

In the accelerating chronicles of the Democrat's decline, Barack Obama has just achieved a new level of disapproval among American voters:

On the 990th day of his presidency, 52% of his countrymen disapprove of the Chicagoan, according to Gallup's latest three-day rolling average.

That means Americans now think as little of their own president as they do of Vladimir Putin, the former Russian spymaster and authoritarian tough guy who's expected to become president again over there.

That's gotta sting.

Putin's the unsmiling fellow who's seen abroad as reining in Russia's democratic movement, limiting independent media and allowing a certain cult of macho man personality to develop around his outdoor adventures and frequently shirtless torso.

Putin, you remember, is the fellow whose eyes President George W. Bush gazed deeply into and mistakenly saw someone he could work with. Since then and despite ongoing overtures and concessions by Obama, we've witnessed the Russian invasion of Georgia and none of the expected Russian help controlling Iran's passion for a nuclear program.

Domestically, Putin is seen as the firm leader who restored stability during his 2000-08 two-term presidency and, fueled by rising oil prices, presided over a prosperous economy.

His hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, in turn appointed Putin prime minister. And Putin, who turns 59 tomorrow, has now announced that having sat out for four years after two terms he will seek the presidency again next year. Do you want to argue with him?

Rasmussen Reports surveyed 1,000 Americans last week and found 52% had an unfavorable view of the once-and-likely-future president of the Russian Federation. That includes 23% who have a Very Unfavorable view.

Obama's disapproval rate was a measly 15% when he took office in 2009 so full of hope and unbroken promises. Gallup charts have shown it generally trending upwards ever since, especially when the massive economic stimulus spending stimulated the national debt more than new job creation.

Despite giving numerous speeches — or, wait, perhaps because of them — Obama's disapproval rating had reached 49% in late September before beginning to creep back toward its term high of 55% from late August.

Today, Obama will try to turn things around with a White House photo op by the woman's basketball team from Texas A&M, Gov. Rick Perry's alma mater.
