I don't think we have to defend kindness and compassion. I think we just need to show they can have tangible benefits. And you don't even need to think of them as kindness and compassion. You really just need to make sure you have structures in place so people don't fall so far, they feel they have absolutely nothing to lose- because that makes for violent and completely anti-social individuals. Even most Randians would understand that. And if not, maybe they'd understand why Rand threw her little self on the state's tender lap at the end of her life...
