A long time ago, sometime in the 1980's, I met Ron Darling at a Carvel in Inwood, NY on the way to a customer in Far Rockway (Bayswater). I got a Chocolate Shake Float and saw Ron Darling outside by himself having a sundae. We talked baseball for a few minutes and then he asked me what I did for a living. He was a real regular very down to earth guy. Those were the days when I worked for the NYC Board of Ed. as a math teacher, then rode around after school tutoring younsters throughout the city. We had a very lively stimulating conversation, which I had to cut short because I had an appointment to keep. I'm pretty sure it was in November before Thanksgiving. He was an extremely friendly guy. I just came across as a person, not a fan. I think he appreciated that.
