U.S. unemployment rate remains 9.1 percent

The unemployment rate stayed steady for September at 9.1 percent and the nation's employers added 103,000 jobs to their payrolls during the month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning.

The number of jobs could have looked worse except that 45,000 Verizon workers, who were on strike and therefore counted among the unemployed in August, were reinstated to the company's payrolls in September and counted as jobs gained.

There are still 14 million people in the country who are unemployed. About 8.3 million of them have been out of work for more than 15 weeks, with average length of unemployment, which has risen for the last four months, now standing at 40.5 weeks.
