Of course taking away the palliatives leads directly to pain. If you feel pain, it means the healing process has started. Free markets don't guarantee zero pain. Fixing these markets won't be painless. Same thing with heroin addicts. Getting free of drugs is not painless. Thinking we can get out of this without feeling pain is simply wishful thinking. Children get in trouble and then look for every way to get away with it. Most of the time, they dig the hole deeper until they are caught. I always told my kids that part of becoming a man was to recognize when you've screwed up, face the music, and then start over. A smart guy in a wildly popular book once said:
"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
