John,

From Fujitsu's recent half year earnings report. Fujitsu's fiscal year ends in March 1998.

...Revenues in the computer and information processing sector rose 12.8 percent from the same period last year. Because of the downturn in PC sales in Japan, the year-on-year increase in the domestic computer and information processing sector was only 7.5 percent. However, brisk demand overseas for small magnetic disk drives and other equipment resulted in a gain of 68.7 percent....

Fujitsu and WDC each gained 5% market share points last year.

In terms of notebook drives, the figures I have seen have IBM and Toshiba with about 70% of the market. Fujitsu is third with about 10%. The total notebook disk drive market is only about 14 million units this year.

John, i don't know if there is a connection between fujitsu's notebook successes and their current aggressiveness in disk drive pricing, but their notebooks are certainly attractively priced. i'm currently in the market for a 150mhz notebook and can't find a better value than a fujitsu at the moment. assuming the others are pricing to make a profit, fujitsu must be satisfied with razor thin margins.
