I think it is a the difference between kids whose parents gave them everything they wanted (iPhones, cars, and all the little spoiled brats got before that), and those who made their kids work for what they got. It's nothing new. I've been reading about "dandy", which was the term Beau Brummel (1778-1840) used in describing himself. Others were Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde.

To a man, they spent fortunes they didn't earn on clothes and other accouterments in order to make themselves look dandy.

To a man, they died penniless.

It is still a mystery to me why some young people have the interest in life, and the drive and the integrity - while others do not.
