I know someone well who has had a long term battle with drug addiction. Instead of the treatment she needed she got incarceration. It was a terribly unjust outcome and it caused me to become interested in the subject. When I started looking at it I started to realize that everyone who knows anything about the subject believes the drug war should be ended. Only people who haven't bothered to look at it or are just dogmatic about can't see how destructive, expensive, wasteful and counterproductive it is. I was in both categories.
